Paper presenter |

Each of you will take turns in being the presenter of the papers and the chair for the discussion topics. The presenter should be familiar with the paper and summarize it in a neat and digestible fashion. |

Course project |

You are required to do a course project on a topic of interest. There will be a presentation period at the end of the semester. Seven milestones, described below, are set throughout the semester for the course project. You are expected to present them in class in a timely fashion.
(1) CP1 (abstract-4%): This is a 500-word outline of what you propose to study. You should include your research question(s), method of study, predictions of results, and implication of the study in the abstract. The topic can be anything concerning the relationship between phonetics and phonology.
(2) CP2 (literature review-8%): This should be reviews of literature relevant to your project. The papers included should be directly related to your study in terms of research questions, methodology, or theoretical backgrounds.
(3) CP3 (methods-8%): This should include an outline of the methods used in the study. You should carefully lay out the details regarding the target language(s) of study, speakers, equipment used, procedure, analysis criteria, etc.
(4) CP4 (resultsu-10%): This should include a clear layout of the results. You should learn how to present your results in a self-explanatory fashion. Please take advantage of graphic and table formats when suitable.
(5) CP5 (analysis-10%): This section should include your interpretation of the results. You should state clearly what implications you can draw from the results and what significant role this study plays.
(6) CP6 (presentation-25%): The presentation will be on 12/18, Monday. You will be given 15-min presentation time slot—13 min for the actual presentation itself, and 2 min for questions and answers. During this time-slot, you are to highlight whatever significant findings you have found in your study. The style of presentation should be formal. You can use whatever media you please. You will be graded on both your presentation skills and audience response.
(7) CP7 (final report-35%): This is due on 1/8, Monday. 10% of the grades will be deducted for each late day. It should be no more than a 20-paged, double-spaced, polished report incorporating all the comments you have gathered throughout the semester, including the final presentation (CP6). The report should follow a formal format, with at least seven sections—abstract (CP1), introduction & literature review (CP2), methods (CP3), results (CP4), discussion (CP5), conclusion, and references (CP2). |

Discussion chair |

For each topic, we will keep a running list of discussion points, and the chair is responsible for leading the discussion and keeping track of the discussion points. For most of the class meetings devoted to a topic, being the chair means adding new discussion points to the list as they come up and circulating the running list of discussion points by e-mail on the day following the class. For the last class meeting on a topic, being the chair means bringing printed copies of the summary list of discussions points, organized in a way that will make it easy for us to recap what progress we have made in understanding the topic. |
